Race!
"Race!" was the largest project I ever undertook, and it was a truly monstrous task.
I started in january of 2014, and it took me more than 1000 hours and over 2 years to complete.
It measures 110*180cm.
After finishing, I could not look at it for a time, for the sheer sight of it made me sick.
Due to its size and detail I could not find a good way to put it on the website in its entirety.
It was on display on 3 occasions
- -Bogart Gallery in Brussels, 2016
- -Huis van de mens in Antwerp, 2017
- -Mekanik comic book store in Antwerp, 2017
It depicts a mirrored, exact representation of the Mont-Saint-Michel on dry land being abandoned by a large crowd that is leaving the city into the fields, trying to climb aboard a airballoon that has already left and is no longer reachable.
The inspiration came from an apocalyptic and pessimistic, yet very common idea that that "the earth is overcrowded", civilisation is corrupted, that we want to reconnect with nature but are unable to, that things were better in the past...
Thanks to Tim Van Herck for the pics.
